Panic and confusion reign supreme in these very unusual times. Jobseeker and Job keeper have just recently been extended by the government, but with a reduced benefit, seeing individuals and businesses stretch through to March 2021. Will there be another extension Only time will tell? Will NSW go into another lockdown? How high will the unemployment rate go? Some are suggesting as high as 15%, matching the peak of 1992. How long will borders be closed? When will we be able to travel again?
We don’t know when things will go back to normal (whatever the new normal will be) but opportunities are abundant around you, if you are willing to stop, notice them and do something about them.
Opportunity you say?
Yes – that’s right Opportunity, and lots of it, but will you grab it?
Let us just stop and think about this for a moment. Any time there has been recession, or hard times have hit in history, there has always been people making lots of money on the other side, but most people are too busy focussing on the negative, the media, and the fear mongering that inevitably takes place.
Yet people who do well, are the ones who seek the opportunity that is presented at these times. It is the difference between one thing and another.
Whether it be a job opportunity, relationship opportunity, business opportunity, investment opportunity, it is there for the taking, but you must do something. You cannot wait, you cannot sit on the fence, you cannot let FEAR take hold. You must make up your mind and go for it. Opportunity waits for no man.
Most people in life wait at red lights, waiting for them to turn green. The ones who grab hold of opportunity in life wait for green lights to go red. The difference is huge.
So why do we miss out on opportunities?
FEAR
Fear of losing money, fear of getting things wrong, fear of making the wrong decisions. FEAR is one of the biggest reasons we stay still and do nothing. Yet making mistakes in life is the only way you will learn and grow as an individual.
LACK OF CONFIDENCE
Another reason may be lack of Confidence. Am I good enough? Do I know enough?
TOO BUSY
Yet another may be being TOO busy in life. Kids, family, Work, etc. Too much going on, living in the rat race to stop and look at opportunity when it is right in front of you, and so we let it pass by, only to regret it down the track.
NOT EDUCATED ENOUGH
If you do not have the knowledge, go and get a coach, get a mentor, hang around people who have been successful in the thing you are looking to do.
Take advantage of opportunities when they appear
So, what do you need to do to take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves?
Embrace the fear, be confident, and get educated.
Understand why that feeling of fear is there in the first place. Is it based on something that happened to you in the past? Did it happen to someone else? Confidence will make the fear go away, as will a good coach who guides you to the right decision.
If money is the issue – talk to a broker, get pre-approvals, use other people’s money. Options are available. Hang with the right people and plan your attack.
Just recently one of our clients came to us looking for a construction funding deal, and even though we presented him with a fantastic opportunity with no presales, they have decided to wait for the bank to offer them a better deal, which we know will either not happen, or if it does will be done at a presale value the client will not like. Getting presales “off the plan” for his development is unlikely to happen, but if he starts then he will likely get the sales at a better price than expected. I am not sure what is holding him back, is he not seeing that the time is right to move ahead now?
I will have to wait & see.
